Vehicle Technology 2026: Tested EV and Driver-Assist Tech

Vehicle technology has two jobs: make driving safer and make ownership easier. We test both, from the charger on your garage wall to the assistance systems that share the highway with you.

Charging at home changes the maths

Most EV owners do most of their charging at home, usually overnight. A well-installed Level 2 charger turns that into a five-second habit and cuts running costs compared with public rapid charging.

We measure delivered power, app reliability, cable behaviour in cold weather and how each unit handles heat. Installation quality matters as much as the hardware.

Driver assistance is good, not autonomous

Adaptive cruise and automatic emergency braking have become genuinely dependable. Lane centring has not. In rain, faded markings and low light, the best systems still disengage without much warning.

We score how clearly a car communicates its limits, because a system that warns early is safer than one that quietly gives up.

Buy the feature you will use

A 360-degree camera earns its price in a tight garage. A gesture control system rarely does. Our guides separate technology that improves daily life from technology that only improves the brochure.

Software updates can change behaviour after purchase, so we note which systems have a track record of useful over-the-air improvements.
